Recommended Books:

These books are my all-time favourite as well as very powerful books to read. Some of them have workbooks that you can also order, but these books really answer a lot of questions and gives insight into a lot that you wanted to know and still do. These books are worth a read for sure.

This book, I highly recommend from Dr. Chris Thurman, a psychologist in Austin, Texas. Most of our emotional struggles, relationship difficulties, and spiritual setbacks are caused by the lies we tell ourselves. One of the key messages for me in this book is, “That, the challenge, is to make our mental tapes as truthful as possible so that we can live life the way it was meant to be lived, experiencing emotional health, intimate relationships, and a deep sense of purpose.” What we need to remember, that is so true, is that “Thoughts produce after their own kind: lies produce death; truth produces life.”

Boundaries, my favourite subject. This book formed part of my Doctoral

This book is all about “When to Say YES, and When to SAY NO”. There is also a workbook available on this subject that has amazing questions within. Simply put, “Any confusion of responsibility and ownership in our lives is a problem of boundaries. We need to set mental, physical, emotional, and spiritual boundaries for our lives to help us distinguish what is our responsibility and what isn’t. If you are struggling with the following questions, then this is worth the read:

  • Can I set limits and still be a loving person?

  • What are legitimate boundaries?

  • What if someone is upset or hurt by my boundaries?

  • How do I answer someone who wants my time, love, energy, or money?

  • Why do I feel guilty or afraid when I consider setting boundaries?

  • How do boundaries relate to submission?

  • Aren’t boundaries selfish?

This book never gets old. I have read this book twice, and certainly will read it again, as the information within this book is so valuable. “Many things lost in life can be restored; however, time misused can never be recovered. Once the sun goes down, the day is forever gone.” This book can be read as an individual or utilized in group study, either way, it makes for a good study. “Eternity arrests the attention of all mankind. No race, tribe, or gender can resist is draw. We were created with eternity in our hearts and sense the immanent unknown extension of our existence. Therefore, it’s wise to delve deeper into what our Creator says concerning eternity. After all, His Word states, “From eternity to eternity I am God. No one can oppose what I do” (Isaiah 43:13 TLB).”

Another book from him which is worth the read, is called, The Bait of Satan. This book comes with a teaching as well.

“Are you compelled to tell your side of the story?
Do you fight thoughts of suspicion or distrust?
Are you constantly rehearsing past hurts?
Have you lost hope because of what someone did to you?

The Bait of Satan exposes one of the most deceptive snares Satan uses to get believers out of the will of God--offense. This trap restrains countless Christians, severs relationships, and widens the gulfs between us. Jesus said, "It is impossible that no offenses should come” (Luke 17:1). Although you will encounter offense, you can choose how you will react.”

Another amazing book to read when looking at understanding stress and the effect it has on our bodies, then it will be this book. Simply put, what this book is all about is that “Our relationships help shape our physiology.” In this book, you will discover that, “People do not become ill despite their lives but rather because of their lives. And life includes not only physical factors like diet, physical activity, and the environment, but also the internal milieu of thoughts and unconscious emotions that govern so much of our physiology, through the mechanisms of stress and the unity of the systems that modulate nerves, hormones, immunity, digestion, and cardiovascular function. Much disease could be prevented and healed if we fully understood the scientific evidence verifying the mind-body unity.” This book is intended to encourage self-examination, insight, and transformation.

This is a book of hope for the client sitting in the chair that will offer hope and healing because there is much common ground between your experience and the experience of other survivors speaking in this book. It will teach you how to: approach the subject of sexual abuse; dealing with the abuse; what was damaged in the abuse; what healing looks like; and finding others to help.
